Riding Vacations
Pearson
Ranch is a family owned and working cattle ranch.
It is located in southwestern New Mexico, surrounded
by the Apache National Forest, at an elevation of 7,620
at the ranch house. Still
virtually untouched, the area offers unsurpassed beauty
and diversity of both ecosystems and wildlife.
The ranch is home to elk, antelope, black bear, mule
deer, mountain lion, bobcat, and turkey. The
top country elevation is 9,820 ft. with some surrounding
peaks reaching 10,000 feet. The ranch has an excess
of 9,700 acres to run cattle on. There are endless
old logging
roads with miles and miles of trails through
forests of juniper, oak and ponderosa pine. Some trails
are
only
accessible
by horseback. There is plenty of riding for the hardy.
Other rides might include hunting for elk and deer
sheds on mountain ridges. (The boys are
holding some elk sheds in the photo to the left.)
On horseback, you can see all the beauty that surrounds
you from mountain top to valley. Some trails go as
high as 10,000 ft. above sea level and some you can
see right into Arizona. On others you can see the
whole plains of St. Augustine. It’s
not uncommon on horseback to
encounter wild game like elk, deer,
turkey, javelina and on rare
occasions black bear. Not to worry, the wild game
is more afraid of you than you would ever be of them.
If you want to see elk up close - then a short horseback
ride or hike through our game park will ensure you
of great pictures of these majestic animals. An orientation
is given to all riders at the beginning of your stay
to match you up to a suitable horse and feel out your
riding ability.
The first day is for arrival of the guests, matching
horses to riders, setting up tack for each rider’s
liking
and getting to know the ranch and each other. The last
day is for packing up, saying goodbye to your new
best friend (your horse) and also to your new two legged
friends. Ride days start off with a good
breakfast, packing your own lunch (since you know what
you like), saddling up, and riding the trail you most
prefer in terms of challenge and duration.
Some rides take you to see old ruins of the first
settlers and Apaches. Other rides will take you to
the tops of the mountains where the views are endless.
The days will end with a good dinner and some tales
of the days events around the campfire.
